1ST COMICS CONTEST - ISOC 2014
International School of Comics wants to celebrate its first year in the United States by taking on a new endeavor, dedicated to the city that welcomed our school: CHICAGO!International School of Comics is proud to present its first Comics Contest, open to all aspiring Comics artists, Cartoonists, and Illustrators, who would like to attend our school and become a professional in the visual arts field. Participants will have the chance to win one of three different scholarship awards and to be published in the next ISOC Student Art Book in 2015.
The contest, aptly named “Chicago Legends”, aims to be a tribute to everything Legendary in Chicago, which means participants will have a lot of material to choose from!
Be inspired by the icons that have impacted the history of this city, the phenomena that have created something distinct, heroes who left a mark in the hearts of millions of people, protagonists who belong to the local folklore, urban legends we’ve heard as kids, celebrities about town, and all of the Hall of Famers. The figures, now immortal, that have revolutionized the history of music, sports, art, food, architecture, literature and all the categories and components that make Chicago unique in the world.
Think of all the stars who found their way to shine in Chicago and still continue to light so bright the cultural scene of this magnificent city. Some too famous not to know and others ready to be rediscovered: Michael Jordan, Muddy Waters, Nat King Cole, Buddy Guys, Patti Smith, Herbie Hancock, John Belushi, Bob Fosse, Scottie Pippen, Walt Disney, Ernest Hemingway, Benny Goodman, Curtis Mayfield, Billy Williams, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robin Williams, and so many more.
Participants could capture the charming, intimate atmosphere of a jazz jam session, tell a grisly tale of one of the most notorious gangsters of Chicago, or even show us how the Chicago Blues came into being. Artists could render their favorite superhero facing off with his arch nemesis on the tip of the Willis Tower, illustrate an epic moment of a sports idol in which they became immortal, or even try to imagine how many funny stories could be told about a deep-dish pizza arriving to a hungry home. There are so many different points of view, different feelings, and different way to tell the same story. Chicago is overflowing with storylines, events, locations, and characters that can serve as sources of inspiration to stimulate your creativity and shape your artwork!
Break your story into a collection of scenes or give life to a superb illustration!
Free your artistic genius, start to design your project, and allow your artwork to embody what makes the city of Chicago legendary.
All artworks will be examined by a committee of instructors at ISOC, who are also working professional artists in the comics industry. Jill Thompson, one of the most accomplished artists in the industry (who is a Chicagoan herself) will be the “Godmother” of the Contest. She is the newest addition to our talented faculty and the casting vote will be up to her.
For the duration of the contest, participants artworks will also have a space in the virtual gallery show on our official website. The top ten finalists will be published in the next ISOC Student Art Book and have the chance to display the originals in a gallery show held at the school. Upon informing the top ten finalists, the International School of Comics will provide all information on shipping or hand-delivering the originals to be displayed.
From the ten finalists, a further selection will be made to elect the three talented artists to be given the scholarship awards:
1st prize: 100% off 1 years tuition for a value of $ 5,000.00 + Publication on School Students Art Book
