ILLUSTRATION CONTEST

SUBJECT:
Be inspired by something legendary in Chicago. Look to sports, music, art, literature, history, folklore, food, crime, and anything else you find to be inspirationally legendary. Participants can also interpret a work (a song, a poem, a speech, etc..) linked to a legend of Chicago. Use your inspiration and create an illustrated work of art.

Participants are encouraged to develop the artwork by adopting their own personal graphic style. They may use their favorite coloring technique, black and white inking, or penciling, as long as it belongs to the traditional visual arts field. (Watercolor, Acrylic Painting, Oils Painting, ect, all examples of traditional techniques, while Digital is not allowed).
Also, depending on the needs of the artist, participants can create just one composition or a series (maximum of three).

STEP 1
The making process:

1. Create a folder labeled with your first and last name.
2. Create a subfolder labeled with the title of your project (here called PROJECT), containing the following files with the details of your project. Organize it in folders with the given nomenclature.
To provide:
• A list of your source of inspiration and references, including pictures and website sources. (Folder named: REF)
• The Idea and the purpose, including the location and spatio-temporal contexts. (Folder named: IDEA)
• Concept design, studies sketches, thumbnails, and pictures of your artistic working progress. (Folder named: CONCEPT)
STEP 2

The Artwork: In the PROJECT folder create another folder named: ILLUSTRATION
• Create your art work by applying the technique with which you feel most confident, be careful to use materials and support suitable for the chosen technique.
Techniques:
•Pencil, Charcoal, Color pencils, Watercolors, Oils Painting, Acrylic Painting, Mixed Media Technique. ChiaroScuro, Soft shading, or Color all acceptable.
• Before you introduce color into your artwork, please scan the pencil version (300 dpi in .pdf or .jpg format). Create a folder for the colored version (COLOR) and one for penciled version (PENC) each containing the scans of the artworks (300 dpi in .pdf or .jpg).

Minimum size A4 paper (9”x12”), maximum size A3 (11”x17”). Paper is participant’s choice, yet must be correct usage for medium.
Scholarship Awards

1st prize: 100% off 1 years tuition for a value of $ 5,000.00 + Publication on School Students Art Book
2nd prize: 50% off 1 years tuition for a value of $ 2,500.00 + Publication on School Students Art Book
3rd prize: 25% off 1 years tuition for a value of $ 1,250.00 + Publication on School Students Art Book

The ten top finalists and award winners will be notified by October 3rd, 2014. The winners will be publicly announced on October 13th, 2014. The top three finalists must have the original artwork delivered to the International School of Comics by October 10th. The artists of the top three artworks, as selected by the committee, will receive the scholarship awards. The artists who are selected as top ten finalists but not selected for the top three awards will be reconsidered for the awards in the event that:

· Winners are unavailable, will not provide response, or unable to deliver the original artwork by the deadline.

· Winners do not possess the requirements stated in the Terms and Conditions.

In order to use the awarded scholarship, the winners will be required to enroll and sign the application form to attend the school by October 15th. 2014.
NOTICE TO WINNERS
Winners will be notified via e-mail or phone. To formalize the acceptance of the prize, winners must respond and provide the original artwork within 7 days from the date of communication. To receive the scholarship award, the winner is required to fill out the application, sign the enrollment agreement (annexed to the e-mail communication), and send it back. Winners may also apply in person to the school (International School of Comics, 1651-52 W. Hubbard St, Chicago, IL, 60622). After expiry of that period, the award will be deemed “forfeit” and will be assigned to another finalist, in order of rank. They will be notified with the same mode of communication and with the same terms for the acceptance referred to in the preceding paragraph for original winners.

PERMITS & CONDITIONS OF USE OF ARTWORKS
• Each competitor is individually responsible for the content of the ARTWORK he/she sends. They must consent to the publication of those claiming to be the owner and the author, with rights of use and exploitation related to the project sent for the contest. Otherwise, the competitor concerned shall indemnify the promoter (International School of Comics, here called ISOC) from any claims, including for punitive damages by the real owner or by a third party assignees.
• The Promoter will not be responsible for any claims made by third parties.
• The participants in the contest give the ISOC authorization and all rights to use (even for advertising purposes), modify, reproduce, even partially, to spread the artwork submitted for the contest.
• Participants artwork will be posted on the Facebook page of ISOC and will also be posted on the website and in all institutional and social media of ISOC.
• ISOC reserves the right to not publish artwork, which may be offensive to the dignity of the subjects, vulgar, or detrimental to competition. All compositions do not have the requirements or will be deemed not consistent, will be deleted, will not be returned and will not participate in the competition.
• ISOC reserves the right not to publish, and delete the artworks in which: have advertised a symbol, a logo, a political ideology or any religion symbol that could be considered a form extreme of fanaticism or that could injure the morality, the ethics and public sensitivity.
• ISOC assumes no responsibility for participation and/or messages received damaged or lost during transmission, received after the stipulated time or with incorrect data.
• All requested data is mandatory. In case of no indication of any information, the person concerned may not participate in the competition. The information and false statements involve immediate disqualification.
